Chloe's Chatter

Guest Blogger Addison: My First Three Day Show!

Chloe & Andrea

It was Sunday morning at the Sedgefield Showgrounds in Greensboro, NC and I was pony-less. My pony boyfriend Simon was not feeling 100% and could not show. My awesome PG Minion boss, Andrea, told me that I could catch-ride the glamorous Chloe. THE CHLOE. I was so excited but really nervous at the same time. I was the first PG Minion to actually show her! I wanted to make Andrea and our trainer, AC, proud of me. I also have witnessed some of the Chloe "stories" first hand so that also made me nervous! But during schooling, Chloe was SOOOOO good for me. We practiced going both directions, changing speeds and my sitting trot (ouch, Chloe!). When I looked over to Andrea and AC, they were both crying. I almost started to cry too but Andrea said that they were happy tears!

Then we looked over to the show ring and my Walk-Trot class had already started! AC and Andrea whooshed us into the ring. I couldn't breathe! I had almost missed the entire first class!  When I got into the ring, I arched my back, put my heels down and looked where I wanted to go. Chloe was amazing and was listening to all my cues. She looked especially gorgeous wearing her Sassy Silver Hi-Lites, too. When the judge told us to trot, Chloe trotted without even thinking and she moved GREAT! One time three riders tried to block us into the rail, but Chlo pinned her ears back, I worked her back out to the inside track, and we showed them who was diva boss. When it was finally time to line up for the results, Chloe and I were right in the middle in front of the judge just like AC taught me to do. Chloe looked around at the other nags and was telling them to get out of her bubble. I had to keep pulling her head around straight! Chloe and I got 2nd place out of a packed class in our very first class together!  I was so so proud of us!

My weekend at Sedgefield was a great first real show for me. It was so fun spending an ENTIRE weekend around my First Call Farm family and horses. I can't wait to do it again but this time with my Simon and maybe even another Chloe catch-ride. She told me she wanted to retire from Jumpers anyway!

GIMME MORE Charleigh's Cookies!

Chloe & Andrea

Everyone knows that I rarely turn down a snack. I have been known to stretch my neck further than any yoga guru has ever seen in order to reach a carrot...or a McDonald's egg and cheese biscuit left carelessly nearby. Okay, that happened ONE time people! SO, when Andrea told me that Charleigh's Cookies was sending me complimentary homemade and organic treats, I was a bit hesitant as I had flashbacks of the time Andrea tried to poison me with her "homemade" natural horse treats  ...YUCK, my lips still ache from all of those lip curls! As Andrea opened the Charleigh's Cookies package and the delicious aroma of oats, barley, corn and sweet molasses filled my dainty nostrils, I knew that Charleigh's Cookies was the real deal.  I  pinned Andrea against the stall door in order to stuff as many in my mouth as possible. (You never know when Pickels is going to be lurking nearby. That nag tries to eat all my snacks.)  Charleigh sent me the XOXO cookies, which is perfect since it goes with my (okay, Andrea's) Pony Glam theme. The XOXO cookies are bite-size, which I really like because Andrea tends to fit more in her hand with one scoop in the jar, which translates into more cookies for me! Charleigh also sent me Southern Swag which contains organic Georgia peaches (nom) and Sweetheart Swag which contains organic cinnamon (nom nom).

For those of you cray cray parents that read the ingredient lists, I have pasted the jar's contents below. As you can see, the cookies are made from "human grade" ingredients and are completely free of sugar,  preservatives and non-nutritious additives. They are 100% organic.  Even old man large pony Simon can eat them until he bursts...and Simon can't eat ANYTHING yummy due to his metabolic syndrome something-or-other.

For those of you who are good all of the time like me, and get cookies or treats after every ride, Charleigh's Cookies also has a subscription club where a 15lb jar of cookies is automatically shipped directly to your stall each month! It's like Smartpak, but COOKIES! What a great idea for a barn!! If ever there was a time to memorize Andrea's AmEx card number it is right now!!!  Cookies for all! Chloe for President!!!

When the owner of Charleigh's Cookies was a new mom, she knew she wanted to instill in her daughter the same passion and love she had for horses. Horses had helped shape her life and she wanted to teach her daughter the importance of giving back. (Finally someone that gets me!)  She says about the cookies, "This healthful snack is our way to say thank you to these majestic creatures for allowing us to realize our own inner beauty and greatness."  No, THANK YOU Charleigh's Cookies!  However, since you brought it up, don't you agree that such a majestic creature as myself deserves a dang chandelier in my stall?? If you could just help a horse out and text Andrea...

Please go "like" CC on their Facebook page and tell them Chloe sent you!!!  Click HERE for the link!  SEE MORE PICS BELOW! xo

Ask Chloe (Almost) Anything

Chloe & Andrea

All this rain lately means two fantastic things: 1). Andrea can't ride me after work; and 2). I have time to go through my fan email.  I was a little upset that there were not any homemade treats in the mail, but I was amused by some of the questions I received! Some of you are pretty naughty and need to be round penned!  Without further adieu, here are the PG-rated questions...

Question 1: What is your favorite Hoof Hi-Lites color?

Chloe: I can tell this question took a lot of thought guys! It is probably a plant from Lexi, worried that I was not going to receive any questions! Anyway, I like all the colors but I think my favorite is probably purple because it is the first color Andrea ever attempted. Plus, everyone knows purple is my color! Gimme Gold and Sassy Silver are definitely up there too because of the intense sparkles.

Question 2:  Why did Andrea say you do not like shows? You seem like you would enjoy showing off.

Chloe: I do love being the center of attention and it is kind of fun to walk into the arena with my name announced. (HEY, I should have the minions do that at home for me during my lessons!!) I also like treats, and I get a lot of those after I show. Sometimes I am so tired I can't even eat my carrots! All that being said, I would much rather be grazing with my bestie, Pickles, and making fun of the boys than galloping Andrea's fat butt around 7 courses!

Question 3: What boots do you wear?

Chloe:  I have been showing in Eskadron Flexi-soft Pro-Safe Memo front and hind boots. I school around at home in Eskadron Gel-Tec boots or just wear my Pony Glam polo wraps! I like my Memos, but they take FOREVER to dry out after they are washed and I do not like them to be wet when they are on my delicate dancer legs.

Question 4: How old you? How old is Andrea?

Chloe: Rude!!!! Andrea is like 60 or something, but AC is like 100.

Question 5:  Did you get your chandelier for your stall yet?

Chloe: NO! Thanks for reminding me just in time for this week's lesson! They will pay!

Question 6:  What bit and bridle do you use?

Chloe: I show in a Rodrigo Pessoa Fancy Stitch that everyone thinks is Edgewood. Figure 8 noseband, duh, and running martingale, duh duh! Bit is a Dr. Bristol Gag Snaffle, with slightly raised copper center piece.

Question 7: Why don't you wear shoes. I can tell in your PG pictures you are barefoot.

Chloe: You are correct; I am barefoot on all 4! It is part of my heroin chic look...just kidding kids! I used to have all 4 shoes when Andrea got me. When she moved me to FCF, I only had my front shoes. All the horses at FCF are barefoot, so soon I was too. I was a little sore the first day, especially walking over rocks (just like it would be for you barefoot), but after those first few days I have never looked back! Thanks everyone for your questions! It was fun!

Sedgefield Showgrounds: Wait, I have to do this again on Sunday?

Chloe & Andrea

So they finally took me on one of those "weekend trips" a few weekends ago. Warning: These "weekend trips" are not trips to the spa like I was falsely lead to believe!  Things started off fine, with a short two hour trip in the trailer with a gigantic haynet of my favorite alfalfa. I should have known right then that something was up because Andrea loves to bribe me with alfalfa. I arrived at Sedgefield Showgrounds in Greensboro, NC on Friday afternoon. Clearly they were not expecting me until Saturday because as I got off the trailer I noticed that the show continued to go on. Lucky for Andrea my stall was already equipped with about 25 bags of shavings (I can always count on AC; she is so much more enjoyable now that she doesn't ride me), about a bale of hay, my favorite Himalayan salt block (you know you have licked one, don't deny it) and my traveling box fan. Maybe I am at the spa after all, I thought.

That's when I saw them setting up the tack stall.  And then I saw Chase and Copper. And then I saw Andrea looking a bit green in the face and I knew. I knew they had duped me into going to a show. Well, I figured two could play that game.  So later in the day, when Andrea took me for a schooling ride around the show grounds, I was an angel. I even yawned 10 times for extra effect. I jumped around the big jumps like they were nothing. I went and hacked in almost all of the 5 rings without a care in the world. Everyone was so excited about what a pro I was, that I almost felt bad for them. Almost. Saturday morning came and I slept through my lunging. Andrea looked an interesting shade of lime green, which did not match her Le Fash polo shirt very well.

Everyone waited around for hours for my first class. Meanwhile, pony Chase was a star in the Short Stirrup ring, with my minion Ellie on board. And Copper and Katy beat 15 or so riders in the equitation class. Meanwhile, I leisurely relaxed on my bed of shavings.  Finally it was time to school, where I again fooled them into thinking I was a packer. My first class was 2'9" Power and Speed. PUH-lease. I can jump backwards over these speedbumps. Andddd, I went so fast in my first class that one could easily argue that I did in fact jump backwards, you just could not see me I was such a blur.  Despite a 2nd place ribbon, Andrea was not happy. AC tightened my figure-eight nose band. And Lexi (Andrea's bestie and my personal favorite groom and assistant) gave me the "I am so disappointed in you" face.  Hmm, maybe I shouldn't have retaliated like this. I did kind of recall that it is easier to just be a good horse and plus, ever since Lexi popped out her baby, her "I am so disappointed in you" face is 10 times worse to endure. Only Zach seemed to be on my side when he walked over with the camera dangling, "That was good, right?"  Six pairs of cold, deadly eyes and a lipcurl from me (I couldn't help it) were enough to silence him for the rest of the afternoon.

So for the higher classes I decided to be good and Andrea relaxed. We ended up the first day with a few reds and even a blue. Everyone was happy. The Minions even came back to my stall after dinner to have a dance party, where I promptly ignored their presence, even though I was secretly loving it.   Day 2 came around.  Andrea was really green in the face now because AC was making her skip the low schooling division and go straight to the higher classes.  I really don't know why she was worried - it wasn't like she was the one jumping anything. The 4 classes came and went. I was on pretty good behavior, Andrea rode better (not like a spectator, like I heard Lexi describe Day 1's first class) and everyone was thrilled about my first real Jumper show. I got tons of carrots, hand grazing and compliments.  All in all, it wasn't a trip to the spa, but it wasn't that bad either. Plus, it sure was fun to go back to the barn and tell everyone that AC treated me to a weekend at the Ritz. That really riled them up and made for an interesting week of lessons.

Must Haves This Spring! Gimme Gimme Gimme!

Andrea Wise

Le Fash Tuxedo Shirt with Hunt Coat

The best part of Spring cleaning is that it creates extra room in your closet and barn tack trunk for MORE items! This month I wanted to share with everyone some new items that I have been using frequently so far this Spring!

Show season is getting into full swing, so what better time to purchase yourself a new show shirt? I choose Le Fash for Andrea's new look! Spring also means more sunlight and longer days. Not only can the sun's rays bleach my beautiful bay coat, but it can wreck havoc on your thin human skin. Andrea is obsessed with keeping her face wrinkle-free (not sure why, she has about 10 other things she should be more concerned with), and what better way to protect her face than this helmet visor from Equivisor.  Since Andrea is protecting her forehead from wrinkles, I want to too! Besides, I am the face behind this operation! Check out my Pony Glam custom Bonnett below! Lastly, Swoon Boutique sent us this adorable horsie ring below. It looks like those trendy two-finger rings that are all over the place, but really is just for one finger-which makes it way easier to wear!

Le Fash Tuxedo Shirt

I have been dying for Andrea to break out her Le Fash show shirt. I even have been really good at home, putting up with all her riding mistakes, just so she would take me to a show and wear it! You may remember that I interviewed Le Fash owner and founder, Arianna Vastino, last year about her fashion forward riding shirts. Arianna personally emailed with me until we decided on the perfect first shirt for Andrea to tryout: the Tuxedo Shirt. The Tuxedo Shirt has Egyptian white cotton strategically placed in those areas visible under a hunt coat. Black Bamboo knit panels and sleeves make up the rest of the shirt, giving your rider complete mobility and a sleek, tailored silhouette.  The look is traditional enough for the show ring, but modern enough to be worn with black pants and heels for a girls' night out on the town. Andrea's favorite parts: the magnetic collar and gold buttons.  The shirt is defintely worth the splurge! In fact, Andrea just pre-ordered a Le Fash Polo!

Please tell them Pony Glam sent you!!!!

Equivisor in Straw Natural

A friend picked up Andrea this Equisvor from a mobile tack store at the WEF showgrounds. Like I mentioned above, she is obsessed with protecting her face and eyes from the sun's harmful rays. Andrea had been looking for a helmet visor that would actually stay on her helmet while she was riding.  The last visor continued to fly off and hit my romp on the way down (rude!). So far, this one has only flown off one time and it was incredibly windy that day. Andrea even jumps me in it without any problems. Admittedly, everyone does make fun of us when she is riding, but it is a small price to pay for beautiful skin! The Equivisor can be worn off your helmet too. It comes in all kinds of colors - even leopard print! Pictured is the Straw Natural.

Subtle rhinestones!

Andrea isn't the only one that gets to protect her forehead from the elements! The Country Saddler made me this beautiful, hand-made Pony Glam bonnett to protect my ears from flies, bugs and loud, rude noises. Really we all know it is just a fun fashion statement. I wear it to all my jumper shows and everyone asks about it. It has the perfect about of rhinestones on the border and the Pony Glam patch really pops against the black. Email us at drea@ponyglam.com for more info!

Swoon Boutique is a local North Carolina boutique that sells human clothing and jewlery. These clothes you definitely do not want to wear around the barn...they are way too cute for that! How adorbs is this horse ring that Andrea recieved? The horse could stand to eat a few more bales of hay, but nonetheless it sure is trendy. Visit their Facebook page to check out their stuff!

Everyone Loves a Good Field Trip!

Me, wondering why this is fun for the humans.
This New Year's Resolution thing has been a breeze so far!! I am checking things off my list left and right! Recently some of us got trailered to WNAAA for a little cross country "fun"! These humans are so weird! What could possibly be fun about running around a perfectly good grassy field and jumping solid obstacles? Don't they know that monsters lurk around every corner? Good news is that I got to work those butt muscles that I told you about in my previous blog post. Bad news is that Andrea did not share my enthusiasm for crow hopping and prancing. She is beyond boring!

WNAAA is in Monroe, NC, and is the strangest place I have ever been. It is a large equestrian facility, around 125 acres, with stables, a covered arena, jumper arena, dressage ring, schooling areas,  5 level cross country course and various trail areas.   So what is so strange about that, you ask? Umm, how about the roaming zebras (poor things, stripes are sooo last season), camels, ostriches, emus, donkeys, kangaroos, goats, reptiles and many other odd creatures! My senses almost exploded as soon as I got off the trailer! In fairness, all these animals are part of a petting zoo on the premises, but who can really trust fences? I am pretty sure the camel could have stepped over the fence and swallowed me whole.

Despite the camels and such, the humans seemed to have a blast. Everyone warmed up by trotting around the permieter of one of the cross country courses. This path took us through the woods, over hills and over small ditches. My sometimes-friend Max was so excited about his first time doing cross country schooling that he had to go off on his own and canter about 50 laps. It was an innocent, yet novice, mistake on his part.  After warming up, we spent about 2 hours jumping various obstacles that you don't see every day at your own barn. There were log jumps, banks, drops, ditches, coffins and much more.
Me, looking fab, but remaining on full alert for monsters.

In summary, even though I would much rather spend my Sundays basking in the sun in my grassy field dreaming about being a broodmare, nothing beats the monotomy of the arena like a good field trip with friends!

For more information and pictures about WNAAA please visit the website at: WNAAA!! WNAAA is also home to the local CHSC shows!

Baker Breeches (no muffins included) and Custom Goods from The Country Saddler

Andrea Wise

Front Pocket Baker Accent Patches
I've done it!! I have successfully managed to steal AC's credit card and order Andrea some proper schooling breeches. Bonus: I am keeping true to one of my New Year's Resolutions!! I was browsing some of the pictures on SmartkPak and I thought these Baker Elite Breeches would be a good start in sprucing Andrea up a bit at the barn. These suckers came in and they were true to their word: fashion forward with wonderful little accent patches of the original and eye-catching Baker plaid.  Now she can match me when I am looking lovely in my Baker blankets! The fabric is different than your normal breeches.  It combines Coolmax, Microfiber and Lycra, which aid in giving the breeches durability, stretch and added comfort.  Dirt also wipes off pretty easily - I tested this out by wiping my snot across her butt... a few times.  The breeches are also front zip, with double snap enclosures, something Andrea was excited about. She said it decreased "muffin top exposure", whatever that means...I spent 5 minutes looking for muffins to no avail. I love blueberry muffins!!
We both have Ombre pony tails!

She also was gushing over the wide belt loops and the back pockets with the Baker patch details. These breeches also have a stretchy sock bottom giving them zero bulky material around your calves, which means they EASILY fit under your chaps. I mean I really out did myself this time people!!!!

The breeches come in multiple colors (pictured: Charcoal). I ordered Andrea her normal size and she thought they fit perfectly, maybe a tad snug at first in the waist but after a few minutes it seemed to give and stretch.  I posted some close up pictures below so you can see the accent details on the front pockets and back pockets! The more pockets, the better possibility for treats!

PG Chaps by Journeyman
(sold exclusively by The Country Saddler)
You may have seen an earlier post about our PG Chaps by Journeymen sold exclusively by The Country Saddler. These babies fit like a glove. Janet  at TCS is a master with the measuring tape. She also does the most amazing George Morris impersonation, which I guess is okay to do without fear of a lightning bolt striking you down if you are his friend like she is!  But anyway, Andrea says the chaps are so soft and supple, they just mold to your leg and you never want to take them off! Note: This is bad news if you are a horse because it increases your chances of being taken out for a "quick ride". I don't know much about chaps, but I do know that Andrea gets compliments ALL THE TIME when she has them on. It is actually kind of annoying now that I think about it...

If you are in the market for new half or full chaps, or any leather repair or creation for that matter, and are in the NC/SC vicinity, make sure to think about The Country Saddler. They are super easy to work with and Wayne is truly amazing at what he does!

As far as the breeches, I think they were a good buy. I am not sure how I feel about the other colors though - I think Charcoal was definitely the best one! Smartpak has them on sale right now so if you need some Breeches, follow the link above!

If your Baker product does not

That's IT? A measly stocking??
Happy New Year Friends! I hope everyone had a better Christmas than I did! I have asked for a chandelier in my stall now for 3 years...THREE years and NOTHING! How can I put on my colored SWAT with this measly light bulb? It's bad enough that I don't have any hands...also something that I have asked for repeatedly! I am supposed to be discussing New Year's resolutions. Wow thanks, Andrea, for such a unique blog topic for a January post. So without further adieu here are a few of MY New Year's Resolutions, which I believe should be adopted by everyone!!

I love my Dr. Lisa!
Treat Yo-Self!     Being awesome 24-7 can be pretty exhausting work! I am constantly trying to come up with new ways to challenge the humans, all the while looking effortlessly fabulous! So therefore this year I resolve to treat myself more often to the finer things in life because DUH, I deserve it! First on my list is scheduling more equine chiropractic sessions with Dr. Lisa! Nothing makes me feel better than a few cracks and pops! Granted I don't have my own money supply (yet), but have no fear! I just need to start acting out while Andrea is riding me. Works every time! So let those bucks fly my friends and treat yo-self to a massage, a facial, or a chiro session this new year!
In my NC area and looking for an equine chiro: Dr. Lisa Busko Website! (Also scroll down for my July Blog Entry)
UTAH area and looking for a great equine massage: Lisa Rask Massage Services

Miles of Sand Covered Trails and Jumps!
Get Your Sexy Back: Lose Those Holiday Pounds! I have successfully batted my eyelashes at every stall passerby this year, and as a result have indulged in an endless supply of carrots, cookies, apples, hamburgers, potato chips, sweet tarts and flakes of hay. I turn 13 this year and my girth is not what it used to be, if you know what I mean. I need to trick the humans into thinking I really like Hunter Pacing. Hunter Pacing, especially at The Walthour Moss Foundation in that deep Southern Pines sand, is a great way to build those butt muscles! You also are guaranteed to get away with at least one "spook" there because of all of the deer and wildlife! Spooking + Jumping over solid fences = Sign me up!!
Interested in where I go? Look at their Facebook Page at: The Walthour Moss Foundation
Sinna, if you are reading this, you might want to consider lunging yourself because no amount of trail riding is going to help that crusty neck!

Boysenberry and Blue Black TS Breeches!
Always Be Well Turned Out!   With all my PG Gear, and the whole never rolling thing, this one is easy for ME.  However, my human is another story and unfortunately for you guys, she is in nearly half of all my pictures! Just because you are at the barn all day does not mean you have to dress like it is cow barn! Hello?! You don't see me standing around my field in a Target blanket? Taking an extra few minutes each day to give yourself a once over won't just get silent "thank-yous" from your friends, but it will make YOU feel better about yourself and the day ahead!   While recently Googling myself I came across the cutest pair of deep purplish  (technical color is Boysenberry) Tailored Sportsman breeches on Shop Dapple Gray! Shop DG has THE fiercest human items! If you haven't stopped by their page you should just stay in 2012! Shop DG!!!

Learn Something New!   Once I jumped the oxer jump AND the cantering pole all in one stride! That was amusing and you should have seen the looks on their faces! This year get inspired and learn something new! Not only does it exercise your brain but it will also impress your friends. I am looking for some cool new tricks to learn so please message me at drea@ponyglam.com. I promise I will give them a try and upload any resulting videos!

Posh Purple!
Pony Glam 4eva!   Admittedly, Pony Glam has been a blast! I get to wear sparkly things, have my picture taken, write blog articles, text with Casallo and lip curl to all my fans. What more can a girl ask for? Hmm, maybe a chandelier in my stall? ... In 2013 I want to help Andrea get Pony Glam into more tack stores, more press articles and get more fabulous Pony Paparazzi pictures! Hoof Hi-Lites will always be our premiere product, and an additional color is in our pipeline of ideas, do not worry! Be on the lookout for new LONG SLEEVE Show Pony t-shirts in NEW colors and in GIRLS sizes!!!

“Never put your faith in a Prince.
When you require a miracle, trust in a Witch.”

Once again that time of year where all the fillies find an excuse to dress up like broodmares has come and gone! Andrea was supposed to find me the most perfect outfit this year, something to accentuate my long dancers legs, but instead she waited until 5 minutes before this blog post and put this lame witch hat on me. I guess because it has sparkles I am supposed to feel better? To make matters worse, the witch hat and cape are not even hers...I heard her ask my Aunt Lexi, "Do you have a witch hat I could borrow for Chloe's blog picture". To which Lexi disturbingly replied, "Yea, I actually have one in my truck". WHAT in the world? What is wrong with these humans? And they think I am weird when I rip my blankets off the stall wall and stomp on them... I said I wanted wallpaper people! Not last season's SmartPak blankets on my wall!

But anywayyyys, thanks fans for sending in your Halloween Costume Pictures. I am really sorry your owners put you through these things. Perhaps I should be thankful that I only have to suffer through wearing this 1990's witch hat? Oh well, I am going to go spook at something...till next time Show Ponies!  xoxo- Chloe

"When it comes to luck , you make your own"

Andrea Wise

You may remember that in my interview last week with Erin McGuire I asked her what sort of superstitious habits she partakes in before the big shows (see below if you missed this award-winning journalism).  Erin answered with some sort of mumbo-jumbo about not believing in luck, but believing in not believing in luck??? Yeah, I know, it sounds like something I imagine Kristen Stewart would say... Lucky (excuse the pun) for Erin, I really like looking at Casallo so I didn't start having one of my "she needs depo episodes" right then and there.

My silly human, Andrea, will tell you that she "agrees with Erin", that she believes luck is something you create for yourself, through hard work and unwavering dedication. She will spat off some sort of Oprah-like quote that says "luck is the meeting of preparation and opportunity". Interesting, especially since she purposely wears the same necklace at every show...or that when she was little she would carry a 4-leaf clover in her jacket pocket! These silly humans! Luck had nothing to do with me being good at my first Jumper show! I was tired and hungry! I wasn't born yesterday, I knew that the faster I was my naturally awesome self, the faster I could get home, showered, fed and out in the pasture with my newest BFF, Paladin. I am pretty sure that Jennifer Zeuner Horizontal Cross Necklace (which is SO three years ago I might add) had nothing to do with me winning!

Anyway, I digress... It turns out Andrea is not alone. When I asked some other high profile PG users about whether they had any superstitious habits for the big shows and Indoors, this is what I found out:

Lillie Keenan (Junior Rider and Equitation Queen): She has a special sweater that she dons throughout the Indoor season for good luck! Her favorite Hoof Hi-Lites are: Sassy Silver for her Hunters and Bella Blue for her Jumpers!
Maddie Schaefer (Pony Princess):  She carries good luck charms in her show coat pocket!
Kaitlin and O.C.
Kaitlin Porath (TOP Amateur Owner): She wears a lucky show coat. This coat is so lucky that she has been wearing it since her Medium Pony days and only brings it out for the big shows and Indoors!! Her favorite Hoof Hi-Lites: Sassy Silver!
Elizabeth Devor (Amateur Owner Star): Liz doesn't have any superstitions per se, unless you count making sure everything is very, very, very clean! Her favorite Hoof Hi-Lites is Gimme Gold!

I don't care what Chloe has to say about luck, I am still wishing Erin and all of my PG friends GOOD LUCK this Indoor season!! Thanks again for your continued support of Pony Glam. You girls rock! xoxo-Andrea

Indoors, Jumbotrons, Luck, Swedish Fish and ... CASALLO

Andrea Wise

Chloe chats with Erin McGuire of Cornelius, NC, about her road to Indoors with Casallo, the official (and first) Pony Glam spokeshorse.  As if there was any doubt, Casallo has qualified for all of the prestigious Indoor horse shows: Harrisburg, WIHS, and the National Horse Show. Erin will be his mount for the Large Junior division and Liza Towell Boyd will ride him in the professional divisions.

Chloe: Let me start with congratulating you on qualifying for Indoors! I know you follow the point standings all year so it wasn't too much of a surprise but how did you feel when you checked the qualifying list for the final time and saw Casallo's name?
Erin:  It’s always such a relief when the qualifying lists are posted! Regardless of how many points you have, it’s still rewarding to see where you stand on the lists!

Chloe: Speaking of where one stands, why isn't Casallo returning my emails? Didn't he notice that I got my tail dyed recently? Andrea has been making me work my butt muscles, surely he has noticed that??
Erin:  Ohhh he’s a mess! He’s probably busy eating his hay net... it’s a full time job! I’ll remind him he has other priorities to attend to!

Chloe: Well, you should tell him that the livestream footage for these Indoor shows adds at least 30lbs, so he may want to lay off the hay net!  Anyway, back to my (boring) list of pre-approved questions...Are you superstitious during show season? Do you have any superstitious habits for the big shows?
Erin:  NO! I look at it this way: if there’s lucky then there’s unlucky. What happens if I misplace my lucky item? Or if it magically becomes unlucky... then what? So I guess you could say I am superstitious about luck!

Chloe: Uh, okay? Who knew you were also a philosopher? Can you describe for my readers what it is like to step out into the indoor arena at WIHS and the other Indoor shows? Also, I would really like to see myself on the jumbo-tron at WIHS. You think you could pull some strings?
Erin: All Indoor shows are different and the feel is really based off of location. At Harrisburg you feel like you are in a dome because the stands are so upright. At WIHS I almost feel relieved to be in the show ring because the schooling area is SO tiny! Either way, it’s an honor to compete at any Indoors show so I try to relax and stay focused. As far as the jumbo-tron goes... maybe I could submit your picture instead of mine?

Chloe: What is the best thing about riding Casallo? Hardest part?
Erin:  Casallo gives his rider such an amazing feeling. He is so suspended in everything he does; he knows he’s fabulous. The hardest part would be keeping his attention! He often times gets distracted by his own ego.

Chloe: Ego??? Never heard of it!... So, you have been riding with Jack Towell at Finally Farm in Camden, SC for nearly 2 years now.  Share with us something invaluable he has told you that everyone should know as a rider and competitor. (Particularly something that would help Andrea, as she gets on my last nerve at shows!)
Erin:  I am so grateful to work with  Jack because he is such a knowledgeable horseman and is genuinely dedicated in me, as a rider. He has said many valuable things, but there is one saying that really puts things into perspective for me. It went something like this: “What do good riders do? They don’t chip. They may get deep or long, but they don’t miss. Sit down and make the distance work. Get 3rd in the class with an okay distance, that’s better than nothing with a chip.”

Chloe: Well said! Is this Jack character single? ... What is one thing you would want people to know about you and/or Casallo?
Erin: I’m not kidding when I say he eats his hay net All. Day. Long. He also likes Swedish fish (or anything else you want to give him) and is extremely jealous of his brother. He screams every time I take my other horse out to graze.

Chloe:  I am not sure why Andrea didn't just use ME as the official spokeshorse, but thanks anyway for helping her out and being such a great PG fan. In closing, because I have to ask, what is your favorite Hoof Hi-Lites color?
Erin: Sassy Silver for Casallo and Gimme Gold for Cascadini.

A huge THANKS to Erin for taking the time for this interview as I know she has a very busy schedule over the next few weeks!  I met Erin over a year ago in the context of finding the perfect local PG horse rep to launch my new brand. I knew Casallo would be THE perfect choice, but I didn't know what to expect from Erin. I can honestly say that from the very first email she has always been very modest, appreciative, generous and sincere. I have enjoyed watching her success throughout the year and I look forward to cheering her and Casallo on over the next few weeks at Indoors via the livestream footage, where despite what Chloe may say, they will look the perfect size and pair! Go TEAM PG!! xoxo-Andrea

Help... Chloe has ants in her pants :)

Andrea Wise

Friends! Please help!! This past week or so I have been sabotaged by ants!! Andrea thinks it is all the rainy weather we have had in NC lately, but I think it may be Chase trying to take over as the permanent face of Pony Glam! My beautiful dancers legs are swollen and scabby from the bites! I cannot go out in public like this - I even missed NY Fashion Week! Please help me!!!!!

Anyone have any suggestions for not only preventing these ant infestations but also treating Chloe?? We have been spraying the fields and paddocks but those suckers just keep coming back! We have never had ants like this! I think Chloe may be in the home stretch because the bumps from the bites are coming to the surface and scabbing but it has not been a fun process for anyone at the barn, Chloe included! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! xoxo Andrea

And the Fall 2012 PG Spokespony is...

Andrea Wise

So I guess Chase is cute, for a pony. He has the dark and handsome part down. Just a little short for my taste..especially when I am wearing my Gucci heels. I really hope he is ready for all the fanfare he is going to receive this Fall, when he takes over my role as the Pony Glam spokeshorse! At least it will keep the Pony Paparazzi off my tail for a few months! Enjoy your new role Chase...and don't get too comfortable! I will be back!!!! - Chloe

CONGRATS to Chase and his owner/rider, Ellie. Pony Glam is really excited to send Chase Hoof Hi-Lites so that he can not only represent our brand in and out of the show ring, but also keep his hooves healthy and fabulous. Did we mention that Chase has the cutest white heart on his rump? He was destined to be a PG model!

Thanks to all the entries and PG support! It means the world to us! All the FINALISTS will receive a can of Hoof Hi-Lites of their choice!  xoxoPG

Chloe's First Jumper Show!

Andrea Wise

Hi friends!!! As you may know, Andrea finally let me be a Jumper a few weeks ago. I mean, how many years of tail swishing does a horse have to do before these humans get it? Of course I still like to swish a tail now and then, but it is generally right into Andrea's eye when she is walking by me and AC is not looking. So far, I have to admit, I really like being a Jumper. Things happen so fast in the arena that Andrea does not have time to agonize about the course and that means that I can just take over the show...like find all my own spots. Phew because that girl can take you to the very base of a 3'3" foot oxer like no other!

You may have read in People Magazine that over the weekend they took me to my first Jumper show. It was Andrea's too and she kept saying she had to "vomit". I am not sure what that means but I could tell she really wanted to lay down in her stall and not eat her hay. In a rare act of kindness I decided that I should try to act calm and cool, so as to not really have her lose her mind. After all, I needed her to be somewhat aware of what was going on since I had yet to step into the arena, there were some pretty strange obstacles in there and on top of it all I could smell a lot of weird animals nearby! AC put me on the longe-line and I yawned and barely moved in the circle.  That seemed to calm Andrea down.

I was in the first class before I knew what hit me. I kept hearing AC remind Andrea that it was our "warm up" class, so I figured I better keep everyone on their toes and do the fan favorite "Stop At The First Jump". There were way more horses and spectators than I thought there would be, so I wanted to be memorable. My stopping is few and far between, so I like to make it really dramatic when I do it. I saw the first jump about 10 strides away and decided to start stopping then. Andrea growled and kicked me really hard, but she is no match for me! On the second time to the jump I cleared it and did the rest of the warm up class really well on purpose as I didn't want AC too mad at me.

Well horse friends, I learned my lesson with that stopping business! In my next class, I tried that same move again and these little spiky things nailed me in the sides! If that were not bad and embarrassing enough, something whacked me on the rump! Didn't they know that my new boyfriend, Josh, who I met at the ingate was watching?! They didn't need to tell me twice! I jumped the next 50 fences clear, fast and did every turn I was asked to on a dime!  Of course I made sure to jump most of the obstacles as big and round as possible. It is a good trick to do because you can't get in trouble for it and sometimes, if you are lucky, you can unseat your rider.

All in all, I really like being a Jumper. I got to wear fancy fleece and leather boots which make my lean dancer's legs look even more shapely. In Jumpers you get to go fast and no one cares if you want to throw a head shake in there. The classes are over in the morning and you don't have to stand around all day watching the little ponies do drive bys, although that is kind of fun sometimes. I didn't have to get my dang mane pulled before the show. I got to wear Bella Blue Hoof Hi-Lites, which got noticed by some cute boys, including Josh. That reminds me, did you know that I am the inspiration behind Hoof Hi-Lites and Pony Glam? ...

Thanks to AC Jones and First Call Farm for preparing me above and beyond for our first show in over 3 yrs and our first ever Jumper show! Also, you were right and I should have listened to you before the warm up class when you TOLD me to put on spurs!!! Oopsie!

I am so proud of Chloe. I wish I had pictures and videos so that you all could see what a rock star she was! It has been a long 3 years, but well worth all the tears and setbacks! The best part is that she really, truly, loved every second of being in the arena... and Chloe only loves potato chips (which she was too tired to even eat after the show)!  My favorite part had to be trotting out of the ring after the Jump Offs, on the buckle, Chloe's head long and low, and hearing people from the sidelines say "what a lovely Hunter she would also make".

Chloe is Fashion Forward with Le Fash, Inc.

Andrea Wise

Arianna and Zeus
Chloe chats with rider Arianna Anderocci Vastino, creator and owner of Le Fash, Inc.  Arianna is a lifelong veteran of the Hunter/Jumper circuit and has spent the last 14 years working in the international high fashion industry.  She has been responsible for styling fashion editorials found in Elle, In Style and Vogue. Arianna has taken these experiences and created Le Fash, the first fashion forward equestrian clothing line geared toward the competitive Hunter/Jumper rider. Le Fash is the 2012 sponsor of riding superstar Jennifer Alfano, winner of the 2012 USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals!

Chloe: Thanks for chatting, Arianna. Does the horse in the Le Fash marketing ads have a girlfriend???
AAV: Zeus, who is featured in our ads, doesn’t currently have a girlfriend. Since he now is a big male model, he has opted to play the field a bit! ;)

Chloe:  Hmm, well if Zeus has his own helicopter, please give him my email! Okay, I better start asking you questions from the "approved" list or else I am going to be in trouble. What inspired you to start Le Fash? Have you always aspired to create your own equestrian clothing company?
High Fashion + Equestrian = LE FASH
AAV: I always wanted to bring my two worlds together. But I think I got a real “Ah-Ha” moment when I first started working as a stylist and would see all of these gorgeous equestrian inspired clothing and accessories from the major labels like Chanel, Burberry, Ralph Lauren, etc. I just hated wearing my show clothes and couldn’t understand why us equestrians are inspiring all of these top designers to produce amazing pieces but then we don’t have anything we can wear that is nice to ride or show.

Chloe:  Tell me about it! You should see what my rider, Andrea, wears! It is mortifying to be around her! ... Anyway, I am pretty observant, as I have been known to spot monsters hiding under jumps that the untrained eye cannot see … I noticed that your shirts have a lot of subtle details that really set them apart from other typical show shirts, such as hand painted metal buttons instead of the plastic ones. Can you tell us about your favorite Le Fash unique details?
AAV: Well thank you so much for noticing!! I really wanted to have my product be high-end soup to nuts. My favorite thing would have to be using the gold buttons because it is supposed to reminiscent of the hunt club buttons adorned on the hunting jackets. Since it’s something that is new to the industry, it has become our signature. Adorning the gold buttons is almost like you’re part of our hunt club.  I really also like all of the top stitching we use. It’s done with a really fine stitch and needle to make it look extra neat and beautiful. I did that so it would emulate tack stitching.

Chloe:  An exclusive club? I like the sound of that! I will order one in every color! If you had to choose, which is your favorite shirt and why?
Black and White Tuxedo Shirt
AAV: It’s so hard to choose because I really love them all. I would have to say that my ultimate favorite is the Black and White Tuxedo Shirt. I actually made this one by accident! When I first started the line, I wanted to bring some new samples for myself to wear and test out when I was showing at HITS Saugerties. I wanted an all white shirt but it was last minute, I didn’t have enough white bamboo left. So I just had my sample maker use the black bamboo since no one would see it under my riding jacket. When I got the sample back, I was like WOW this is amazing and everyone at Saugerties was stopping me and asking where they could get one! It is now our ultimate best seller and I like that it happened the way it did. Some times in life you stumble and if you react without hesitation, things actually just fall into place better than you could have planned.

Chloe:  So very true!...In case you did not know, I am a “Jumper” now.  Apparently tail swishing is frowned upon in the Hunters… Do you have any fashionable Le Fash shirts that are geared to the Jumper crowd?
AAV: Of course! Our all white shirts or even the Tuxedo Shirt mentioned above are great for our jumper clients. We also just released our new Polo Shirt Collection last week at AETA. We have done great colors in our Sport Polo that would be great for a casual schooling jumper class. This body has the Bamboo/Spandex/Cotton Knit base with an Egyptian Cotton collar and 1/4 placket. The collar is a shirt collar so it’s a little fancier than a normal polo collar. Available for men and women!

AAV: Also, we did the Show Polo especially for the jumper riders. It has the same body as the Sport Polo but with our normal show collar with the magnetic closure. So under your riding jacket, it looks like a normal show shirt, but with a comfy knit, short sleeve body. We have it in all white or in a white body with a blue twill collar and placket.

AAV: All of our polos come with the Le Fash “F” embroidered logo on the chest! So cute!

Chloe: I really like how you suggest riders monogram their cuffs as opposed to their collars. Has this been getting more popular?
AAV: Since our shirts have the magnetic collar closure, you can’t do your monogram at the collar, which I like. I never monogrammed my collars anyway because I liked the clean look. I started to monogram my cuffs instead which is an idea that I got from men’s custom shirting. That is where their monogram always goes  and I think it’s subtle and elegant. I would like to see this trend catch on in the show ring more. How gorgeous is it to see your initials peeking out on your cuff while jumping a beautiful hunter jump?

Chloe:  What is next for Le Fash?
AAV: We are planning on expanding our line into a full array of show and casual attire. I have some great ideas that we are just starting to play around with for pants and accessories! All of our products will follow in the same line as our shirting: very fashion forward, high end with a  seamless “barn to town” transition.

Chloe: Where can I buy Le Fash for Andrea (with her credit card, of course)? I am sick of her riding me in last season’s clothes. You know that sometimes she rides me in clothes from Target?????
AAV: Currently, Le Fash is carried at LA Saddlery in CA, Barrington Saddlery in IL and Willow Tree Designs mobile unit in CO, which will next be attending the Las Vegas National and St Louis Charity.
Also, starting this fall, we will be carried at Equine Divine in SC, Kocher Tack’s mobile unit which attends all major horse shows such as Cap Challenge and PA National, Tack of Shop of Austin in TX and Dapple Grey in Canada. And of course, you can order online at the Le Fash Inc Facebook Store anytime if you don’t have one of our retailers in your area. www.lefashny.com has the direct link!

A big THANKS to Arianna for chatting with Chloe and keeping Chloe's fans up to date on what is fashionable! Please show your support for Le Fash by "liking" the Le Fash Facebook Page!! Stay tuned for pictures of the Show Polo! Chloe will be purchasing one (for me) as soon as it is available online at www.lefashny.com!

ASK THE CHIROPRACTOR: Chloe gets her back cracked...and she LIKES it!

Andrea Wise

Chloe enjoys a chiropractic session and interview with her favorite chiropractor, Dr. Lisa Busko, DVM.  Dr. Busko will always hold a special place in Chloe’s frozen heart after significantly improving Chloe’s life (and her rider’s emotional health) through a series of chiropractic sessions nearly 3 years ago.  Dr. Busko graduated from Colorado State University’s Veterinary program and is certified in both Veterinary Chiropractic and Veterinary Acupuncture.

Chloe:     What in the world are you doing to me, Dr. Lisa? I hate that you are touching me but it feels sooo goooood (insert: hanging lower nag lip).
Dr. Lisa:   It is called Chiropractic, Chloe. Chiropractic focuses on the relationship between the structure (the spine and bones) and function (the nervous system) of the body and how that relationship affects the health of the horse. The nervous system coordinates all of the activities of the body and if it is not functioning efficiently, the health of the horse can be adversely affected. The goal of chiropractic is to optimize the health of the horse, by fixing subluxations in the spine and joints.  A subluxation is a decrease or lack of  normal range of motion in a joint.

Chloe:     Uhh, okay? I didn't do well in Science Class... So, how does an owner know their horse needs a chiropractic session? I know that I got my first session when I started bucking after jumps!
Dr. Lisa: Every horse can benefit from regular chiropractic adjustments because it keeps the spine and joints in alignment which will help the horse perform well so their rider will look good… especially during shows. We all know that means more ribbons for the rider and more carrots for the horse!  Horses will let their rider know if they can’t perform as well as usual or if some of their work makes them feel uncomfortable or painful.  You should probably just limp or shorten your stride to let Andrea know, maybe refuse a jump or two.  If that doesn’t make Andrea call me then bucking is an option (but only if your rider is hard headed)!

Chloe:     Bucking it will be!!! This is great news! ... How often should horses have this done? I will pay you 5 carrots if you tell my mom that you suggest I have a session done daily.
Dr. Lisa:  Every horse is different, but I tell riders to schedule appointments every 4 to 6 weeks to start. After a couple of adjustments we can work out a schedule that works for the horse.   Some horses need to be adjusted every 4 weeks and others can be adjusted every couple of months.    Horses work very hard for their rider preparing for shows or taking trail rides and if a rider is not very balanced or the saddle doesn’t fit well that can make their back hurt.  Since a great horse doesn’t complain, they compensate for any pain by walking abnormally (all so the rider has a good ride) and that can cause subluxations.

Chloe:     Do you get queasy when you have to touch a really ugly, out of shape, nag horse? I know I would!
Dr. Lisa:   Dear Chloe, not everyone can be as beautiful as you.   I don’t get queasy touching ugly nags because everyone can benefit from chiropractic adjustments.  Perhaps if the “ugly nag” gets an adjustment they will feel better and start working out, get in better shape and find a rider that will groom them and make them almost as beautiful as you are.

Chloe:     Dr. Lisa, let's not get crazy here! All the grooming in the world can't work miracles! ... What kind of results can owners and riders expect to see after a session or if needed, a series of sessions?
Dr. Lisa:  Riders and owners can expect to see an improvement in their horse's performance, increased energy and willingness to work.  Sometimes it takes a few adjustments to completely fix a particular problem, but the horse can expect to be a lot more comfortable.

Chloe: Well I do enjoy being comfortable! What should owners look for when choosing a horse chiropractor?
Dr. Lisa: Owners should make sure that their chiropractor is either a Veterinarian or Doctor of Chiropractic, in addition to having knowledge of the species of animal they are working on.   They also need to be certified through one of the following chiropractic organizations: International Veterinary Chiropractic Association or American Veterinary Chiropractic Association.   Chiropractic Certification requires a significant amount of advanced training through a veterinary  chiropractic college such as Options for Animals in Wellsville, Kansas where received my training.   I am also and instructor at Options for Animals. You can visit the college website at:

If you want to see me doing my stretches with Dr. Lisa, scroll down! Please, no stallions beyond this point!!!

Dr. Lisa shares 3 simple stretches that can be done after every ride! For all the stretches start by holding the stretch for a few seconds and then gradually increase the hold each time.

Front Leg StretchFold fore leg up supporting the cannon bone, lower the limb a little until the carpus (knee) is pointing to the ground, and put slight pressure on the front of the leg (the radius), then unfold the leg in front of the horse and let them stretch.  Watch your fingers and toes – sometimes they slam their foot down.

Back Leg Stretch:  Hold the fetlock and gently pull the leg toward the front leg  (under the horse) about an inch or two off the ground. Then, hold the leg even with the other back leg and do small circles clockwise and counterclockwise (about the size of a silver dollar) 10 times each direction, repeat with the leg 6 inches forward and 6 inches backward.

Back Stretch (2 parts): Scratch the belly with both hands or use a curry until the horse arches his back upward, then scratch or curry the back until the horse arches the opposite direction.

A BIG thanks to Dr. Lisa for being a good sport...and guaranteeing that Chloe is in a good mood for at least another few weeks! Also, a quick thanks to Lexi for holding Chloe during her stretches! If you are in the Charlotte, NC area do not hesitate to give Dr. Lisa a call. Your horse will love you for it!! For more information visit Dr. Lisa's website at: www.drlisabusko.com

ASK THE JUDGE: Chloe gets a peek at the Hunter judge’s scorecard!

Andrea Wise

AC showing a
client's Green  horse
Chloe chats with Anne Carter “AC” Jones, NCHJA Judge and 35 year veteran of the Hunter-Jumper world.  AC has worked alongside big names like Katie Prudent, Bill Graves, Greg Best, Leslie Howard, Brian and Kevin Lenehan and she has groomed (no pun intended!) countless young horses and riders for the AA show rings. AC is the Owner and Trainer at First Call Farm in Davidson, NC.  With over 14 shows scheduled on her judge’s calendar so far this year, you may just see her in the judge’s box at your next show!

CHLOE:  Okay, first thing is first.  Tell us the truth, do bays get more points??
AC:         Uh (insert laugh), I don’t award extra points to horses for being any color, except bright pink.

CHLOE:   Fine, you can tell me the truth about that later, off the record!  Now for the boring questions that I am required to ask you… What is your favorite part about being a judge?
AC:         Getting to see new talent in horses and riders and watching competitors in general within the industry get better and better with each show season.

CHLOE:   We all know that 1st impressions are critical. I have been told that my first impressions are generally the best in the business. What makes a good first impression in the show ring for you?
AC:         A crisp workmanlike appearance, a happy expression on a horse’s face, as well as bold but fluid movement with effortless carriage.

CHLOE:   So, we now know what makes a good first impression on you, but what makes a really bad impression?
AC:         Bay horses… just kidding! My pet peeve is seeing twisted reins, but seeing a rider sitting off center or ride with their body counter to the horse’s correct bend drives me crazy!

CHLOE:  I am going to go off my “pre-approved” list of questions for a second... What are your thoughts on tail swishing?
AC:         If it’s an expression of discontent and not a defense against flies, then it NEEDS TO STOP.

CHLOE:   If someone has a perfect trip over fences, but they and/or their horse are not well turned out, do you penalize them for it?
AC:         I try not to, but it depends on the situation.  If tack or clothing is so ill-fitted that it becomes distracting or interferes with the horse’s performance, then of course, points would be deducted. Of course, if that were the case, they wouldn’t have a perfect round anyway.

CHLOE:   In an under saddle class, tell us what your ideal winner looks like? Sorry, pointing at me is not an answer.
AC:         A relaxed horse or pony, with a long, effortless, ground-covering stride, that travels in a lightweight compact frame on minimal contact is what my ideal hack class winner would look like.

CHLOE:   For an equitation class, what are the top 3 things you are looking for from the rider?
AC:         A classically correct position; an effective use of the aids and soft execution.

CHLOE:   Lead Changes (insert head toss)! They have gotten the very best of us at some point… mainly rider error, of course!  What if we miss a lead change, is it better to hold the wrong lead, simple change or cross canter? Please help my silly rider!
AC:  Never, ever cross canter – the horse becomes disengaged and is essentially cantering on two leads at the same time. Simple changes are sometimes acceptable, but only at the lowest levels of hunter competition or (for good reason) in IHSA competition. Of the three choices, to hold the counter lead is best (except in intercollegiate equitation competition).

CHLOE:   Do you judge the tack in the hunter ring? For instance, do you give more points to the person without a martingale versus with one? Or the person in the Snaffle versus the Pelham?
AC:         Some tack is not allowed in the hunter ring.  I would have to eliminate a rider if they were using tack that is not allowed. If a standing martingale is needed, then by all means, please use one, just not too tightly; although I personally prefer to see a hunter compete over fences without one but only if the horse doesn’t need it. I have no objection to a Pelham bit in the hunter or equitation divisions so long as it is used appropriately. I have often used one, past and present. But, if the horse is bracing against a Pelham bit with a stiff jaw or topline or is curled behind the bit to evade it, then the Pelham is not being used correctly and the rider should switch to a milder bit such as a snaffle and do more work at home on light contact and transitions.

CHLOE:   Is there anything else that you think riders need to know before they walk into your show ring?
AC:   Yes. Relax and show me the best of everything your horse can do. If your horse has a lovely walk, show me his best walk. If your horse has a great jump, ride him to a fence and give him his best advantage to jump the heck out of it.  Don’t override and take away from the horse’s natural ability, let him show himself off with just a little help from you. For example, it drives me crazy when riders chase their horses at the trot in an under saddle class. What I mean is, they keep pushing their horse more and more to achieve an impressive trot.  But, instead of gaining an easy, long, ground-covering stride that gets you where you want to go efficiently (lots of ground gained with very little effort); they’ve created a faster, quickened and shorter stride which is inefficient and totally refutes the very essence of the definition a “hunter hack”.  Also, never bring anger or harshness into my show ring. If a rider acts abusively (even inadvertently) without thinking of how the horse perceives his actions, then I am not in any way tolerant of this form of riding.

CHLOE:  Do you have a favorite Hoof Hi-Lites color?
AC:         “Gimme Gold” because that what my horse’s heart is made of. (Insert gagging noise from Chloe).

CHLOE:  Would you like to ride me?
AC:   Chloe? You’re kidding, right? I already do, whenever you’ve taken your normal Diva self to some new extreme! (And you love every minute of it, in our love/something relationship.)

A special thanks to AC Jones for being Chloe’s first interviewee!
